ONE OF BILLBOARD'S "100 GREATEST MUSIC BOOKS OF ALL TIME"The provocative transgender advocate and lead singer of the punk rock band Against Me! provides a searing account of her search for identity and her true self.It began in a bedroom in Naples, Florida, when a misbehaving punk teenager named Tom Gabel, armed with nothing but an acoustic guitar and a headful of anarchist politics, landed on a riff. Gabel formed Against Me! and rocketed the band from its scrappy beginnings-banging on a drum kit made of pickle buckets-to a major-label powerhouse that critics have called this generation's The Clash. Since its inception in 1997, Against Me! has been one of punk's most influential modern bands, but also one of its most divisive. With every notch the four-piece climbed in their career, they gained new fans while infuriating their old ones. They suffered legal woes, a revolving door of drummers, and a horde of angry, militant punks who called them "sellouts" and tried to sabotage their shows at every turn. But underneath the public turmoil, something much greater occupied Gabel-a secret kept for 30 years, only acknowledged in the scrawled-out pages of personal journals and hidden in lyrics. Through a troubled childhood, delinquency, and struggles with drugs, Gabel was on a punishing search for identity. Not until May of 2012 did a Rolling Stone profile finally reveal it: Gabel is a transsexual, and would from then on be living as a woman under the name Laura Jane Grace.Tranny is the intimate story of Against Me!'s enigmatic founder, weaving the narrative of the band's history, as well as Grace's, with dozens of never-before-seen entries from the piles of journals Grace kept. More than a typical music memoir about sex, drugs, and rock 'n' roll-although it certainly has plenty of that-Tranny is an inside look at one of the most remarkable stories in the history of rock.

I'm not a fan of Against Me! but read this book for the gender transition story and great writing, on the recommendation of fans of the band. It's a page-turner and I read straight through it.The story was gleaned from journals kept by Laura Jane through the years so the narrative felt like it was in real time, with a wealth of detail, celebrity name-dropping, and details about living life on road. If you have transgender friends or family members, this book can help you and others understand the conflicts and pain that can occur from gender dysphoria, and if you are a fan of the band, it's even better!
I thought this was really interesting insight into a transgender person as a human, being rather than just "LGBT". Both are important, but I think it's important to remember that we are all human and every human, regardless of religion, race, gender, or their place on any spectrum - is a valid and important part of the culture.Laura Jane gave me insight into how she feel now, and also how she felt when she was younger and her name was Tom.Congratulations Laura Jane Grace, for giving the rest of the world some insight into your unique life experience. It takes an extra ordinary amount of courage to open yourself up to the scrutiny of the big wide world ( which can be very judgmental and unforgiving at times.) May the Universe continue to bless you as you live your truth.
I'm an AM! fan and was very excited to read this book. I enjoyed it, but my big complaint is that it seems stretched too thin. There are moments when Laura discusses the band and moments when she discusses her dysphoria, but Inever felt like I got a real taste of either. The book just moves too quickly. That being said, I would recommend this book if you are interested in the band. There are some fun facts and a few Easter eggs that keep the book fun.
Since I was young I've loved biographies. Started with sports stars. By middle school my love of music trumped my love of sports so I started reading rock biopics. Though I'm a huge fan of Against Me!, I actually ordered this to learn more about gender dysphoria as a friends child recently came out. Was pleased by the fact that it was a rock bio that dove into her dysphoria as well. Litterally read it in a day. Already passed it along to another Against Me! fan. Good read. Good writing.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It talks about both Laura Jane Grace's struggles with gender identity, as well as the struggles of life in a band. I find that it was very well written. Being both a rock musician and someone who is gender non conforming myself, I was able to relate to many aspects of the book. This is a great book for anyone in the punk rock scene to read. It can also give another perspective on accepting your gender identity and not feeling like it is something you have to know from when you were a child.
Been a fan of against me for a while, I was surprised when Laura announced she was transitioning. And even more surprised when i heard she was writing a memoir. It's a page turner the book mostly focuses on her band, her record deals and of course how gender dysphoria is constantly in the background. Laura is an inspiration, but she's not positioning herself to be a role model. Her story is simply one of many in the LGBTQ world. Self deprecation, stories of drug use, friendships and romance found the stories are raw, honest and can be a punch in the gut. I should give a disclaimer that I am still reading this but it has kept my attention and i believe it deserves it.
Loved this book. It was great to read about her experience both personally and as a lead for Against Me! I am even more of a fan now after reading this book, but I really appreciated how open and honest this book way. It was also interesting to hear about the life of the band before social media. It's a real page turner, I couldn't put it down. Thank you for sharing your story. I hope we can read in the future how it continues.
The book allows the reader to experience the first hand life of a touring punk band. Even if the names of clubs or cities are not familiar, the quest for happiness is.Throughout the book Miss Grace intertwines her dysphoria and her self destructive behaviors. A powerful read! The only reason I did not give it 5 stars is that the intensity of the beginning of her transition was not as in-depth as the other aspects of the book.I recommend the book highly to anyone searching for themselves.
